Discover the history of Catalonia, a centuries-old nation.

The History Museum of Catalonia was opened in 1996 by the Generalitat and it is located in the antique Magatzems Generals de Comerç (MGC) or Palau de Mar, the only preserved building from the old industrial port from Barcelona. Its contemporary architecture is appreciated in all the building as well as the terrace, where you can enjoy the amazing view from Barcelona.

At the Museum of History of Catalonia, you’ll find interactive exhibits and scenes that will let you learn how the men and women of the past lived, thought and felt, from prehistory to the twenty-first century. It’s perfect for families; they’ll find fun and thrills for young and old thanks to the objects, documents, historic recreations, dioramas and audio-visual elements of the permanent exhibition.

The museum offers a free guided tour through the permanent exhibition about Catalonia's history every Sunday and holiday days, which takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Don’t miss the panoramic views of the city and the port from the rooftop (and enjoy our coffee and bar, 1881 Restaurant)
